Week 31: Hair!

Genetics are always such a crapshoot. Which is what makes life interesting. Will she have Nick’s temperament (I pray to God!) and my love for organization? Will she look like one of us, both of us, none of us? Up until recently, we didn’t dare ask these questions. Preparing for a baby and imagining a baby are actually two different things.

Preparing. That’s easy to do. It’s logistics. Stuff. To-do lists. And if you know Monique, you know she does those things well.

Imagining a baby. Well, that’s some tough stuff. We know she is real but do we dare to dream? Do we dare to think about all possibilities of things she may or may not be? Or will we just end up in pain again like we did with Marley, Maya, and Zion?

Although I had not imagined what she would look like before getting the 3D ultrasound of her face, I always assumed that any kid of ours would be bald. Nick was a bald baby. I was a bald baby. Therefore, two bald babies create another bald baby, right?

WRONG!

This kid has loads of hair. In fact, I was so convinced that she wouldn’t have hair that I didn’t buy her a brush and comb. Instead, I put a few headbands and bows on our shopping list because I was that convinced. Genetics, you win again!

What remains to be seen is what kind of hair this kid has. Will it be tightly curled like mine? Or straight like Nick’s? I’m guessing something in between but again, who knows?

I’m still not buying a brush and comb. But, with two different hair textures already in the house, we have loads of combs and brushes and are bound to have something for her hair type. Right???
